ABOUT
Hidden 50-foot waterfall deep in old-growth wilderness — experts only.
The existence of the Devil's Staircase — a 50-foot tiered waterfall hidden in one of Oregon's wildest forests — was not confirmed until the 1980s. This legendary falls can only be reached by bushwhacking through dense virgin old growth, home to cougars, black bears, bobcats, and other wildlife. Only hikers with strong navigational skills should attempt it, as many have lost their way among the unmapped ravines; a guide is strongly recommended, and local agencies occasionally offer public guided hikes. Accessed via NF-41 between the Smith and Umpqua Rivers, roughly 16 miles east of Reedsport — contact the BLM for details. Distance: 4 miles one way; reaching the falls can take a day or more. Difficulty: Extremely difficult. No facilities.
